The cost of workplace silence: Nearly half of employees feel unsafe speaking up at work, new research reveals
Reported by Mental Health First Aid England. The analysis below is ours.

45%
feel unable to raise a mistake or a risk at work
2,000 UK working adults; 15% said they had made a preventable mistake because they felt unsafe speaking up
The last figure is the one for a board: 15% made a preventable mistake because raising it felt more dangerous than letting it happen. Silence is not a wellbeing line item here, it is an operational risk with a defect rate attached.
What MeaningFuel does about it
- Before it happensWhat the daily ritual works on, every working day
- Courage and Trust, arriving before anything has gone wrong. A team asked to speak up for the first time during an incident has been asked to try something new on the worst possible day.
- After it hasThe module prescribed to the team that has this
- Book Learning from Mistakes for the team where mistakes go unsaid: ten short daily lessons over two working weeks on meeting a mistake with a question rather than a culprit, with two ten-minute debriefs its lead runs. Each person chooses whether to take part, and nobody's answers reach the lead.
- What management seesThe reading that makes either one provable
- Engagement by team, beside the leaders' own quarterly read on whether the room changed. Where those two disagree is the finding worth having.
The offsite worked. That was never the problem.
Week six is the problem. The person who ran it has moved teams, the thing everyone agreed has quietly stopped happening, and nobody can name the day it stopped.
MeaningFuel keeps it going: one short insight each working day on the values you chose, and a two-week micro-training for any team that falls behind. You see which teams carry them, pooled, with nobody named.
